Based on extensive document reviews and interviews with key stakeholders involved in each of these mechanisms, this paper will compare and contrast the experiences of 3 different regional data coordination mechanisms in different regions of the world. It is hoped that by presenting documenting existing processes and extracting lessons learnt, regional coordination on data can be improved. The paper will outline the processes that led to the creation of these mechanisms, the process that they followed to coordinate and standardise data, the target groups for coordination, the extent of integration of this coordination with national priorities, as well as highlight key challenges and lessons learnt. The paper finds that coordination within humanitarian or development groups has been easier, but that bridging the humanitarian-development nexus has thus far proved challenging for these mechanisms. Lessons learnt include the need to driven from the bottom up, listening to national stakeholders, but also the need to linking global, regional and national initiatives.
