Group Submission Type: Formal Panel Session

Proposal

The panel objective is to showcase research developed by the 2022 GEM Report Fellows to help advance knowledge on critical policy issues relevant to the global goals. The 2022 Fellowship edition is the fourth round of the GEM Report Fellowship programme, adding to a growing, diverse network and community. Seven new fellowship appointments were made in 2022 for five projects. The Fellows are tackling diverse topics that speak to the CIES 2023 theme: Improving Education for a More Equitable World. All of the Fellows are contributing rich insights on education monitoring and equity implications of their research agenda.

The Panel begins with a brief overview by Dr. Priyadarshani Joshi, Senior Research Officer at the GEM Report Team coordinating the Fellows program, and chair of the session. She will introduce the GEM Report, and the key opportunities that were provided to the Fellows.
The Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report Fellowship Programme, funded by the Open Society Foundation, supports researchers who aim to bring a novel perspective to comparative and international education development to aid the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, the global education goal. The Fellowship offers an opportunity to be part of a select group of scholars and researchers, collaborating with the GEM Report team on one or both aspect of its core objectives: (1) to monitor and report on progress in the SDG4 on education and education-related aspects in other SDGs; (2) to report on the implementation of national and international strategies to help hold all relevant partners to account for their commitments as part of the SDG follow-up and review. The main opportunities from the Fellowship are to author a Fellow Paper; learn about GEM Report work; and engage with the community of Fellows and the research team.

The five presentations will proceed as follows. First, Dr. Phyrom Eam, will present his Fellow project (co-authored with Dr. Sopheak Song) on technology integration in the Cambodian higher education system in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Nani Teig, will present findings from her project on embracing teachers’ role in promoting equity in the classroom, highlighting global patterns and evidence from 58 countries. Then, a presentation by Magali Ramos Jarrin will speak from analysis on institutional conditions for equitable access to higher education in Ecuador. The fourth presentation by Rodney Buadi Nkrumah, focuses on in-depth qualitative and quantitative insights from Ghana’s basic school system on learning. The final presentation by Sukie Xiuqi Yang will present co-authored work with Kai Feng, mapping the impacts of climate change on children’s education in the Global South using Demographic health survey data. Each of these presentations will focus on the equity and inclusion implications of their research analysis in this session.
