Building Diplomatic Negotiation Skills to Solve Education Challenges

Sat, February 18, 9:30am to 12:30pm EST (9:30am to 12:30pm EST), Grand Hyatt Washington, Floor: Declaration Level (1B), Tiber Creek B

Group Submission Type: Pre-conference Workshop

Description of Session

Background:
A key challenge faced by education practitioners is how to strategically position themselves for advocacy and collaboration in an education sector space increasingly characterized by diverse actors, organizations, and sectors. It is well established that working collectively with different sectors and stakeholders is necessary to achieve shared education goals. What is less clear are the mechanics of how we can collaborate effectively. Greater attention must be directed to how education stakeholders can build and navigate collaborative work relationships across different disciplinary, sectoral, and operational boundaries to produce positive educational outcomes.
This workshop will introduce participants to the innovative practice of Education Diplomacy, which is transformative in facilitating collaboration among diverse stakeholders to achieve common goals and visions in the education sector. Developed by Childhood Education International, Education Diplomacy combines the fundamental concepts and practices of diplomacy, international relations, and education leadership and management. It is based on the premise that we need to actively build and leverage diplomatic skills and strategies if we are to work together effectively to tackle complex educational challenges.

Workshop Aim:
Childhood Education International’s innovative “6C” Education Diplomacy model for collective impact provides a skills-building approach for key competencies needed to effectively engage in collaborative work, including diplomatic communication, trust-building, partnership building, strategic planning, negotiation, and consensus building and conflict resolution.
This pre-conference workshop will introduce the 6C Education Diplomacy model, focusing on Diplomatic Negotiation. Diplomatic Negotiation is the art and skill of finding a joint and mutually acceptable solution to a shared challenge. In this workshop, participants will build their knowledge of Diplomatic Negotiation as a critical skill for working in collective settings, particularly when opposing viewpoints and interests need to be reconciled.

Workshop Overview:
Participants in the workshop will benefit from the following learning objectives:

Gain overview of diplomatic negotiation in the education sector

Prepare interests and objectives in advance of diplomatic negotiations

Learn how to anticipate objectives of other stakeholders involved in the negotiations

Hone effective interpersonal skills for engaging in negotiations

Learn diplomatic negotiation tactics to help achieve collective action, including such strategies as Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) and Worst Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (WATNA)

Practice diplomatic negotiation techniques for advancing an agenda in multiparty settings

Prioritize relationships and relationship-building as long-term strategies for negotiation success.

Workshop Format:
Lecture & group-based activity

Workshop Intended Participants:
• This workshop is intended for early to mid-career practitioners who would like to acquire negotiation skills to advance education reforms or solve complex education challenges (e.g., participants working in challenging situations with multiple stakeholders, starting a new initiative or program, or implementing new policies).

• Students who are planning to work in multistakeholder environments.

• Participants with more advanced levels of negotiation experience in education are also welcome to share their experiences.

Note that Certificates of Participation will be awarded by Childhood Education International upon completion of the workshop. In addition, completion of this workshop will count toward certification in the CE International Foundations for Education Diplomacy to Achieve Collective Impact online course.
