Malawi STEP Baseline Situation Analysis: Primary Teacher Education in teacher training colleges

Tue, February 21, 2:45 to 4:15pm EST (2:45 to 4:15pm EST), Grand Hyatt Washington, Floor: Independence Level (5B), McPherson Square

Proposal

The STEP Activity is working with the Malawi Ministry of Education (MoE) to improve the quality of primary teacher education taking place in all public and private teacher training colleges (TTCs) in Malawi. To inform the technical approaches of the intervention, the STEP consortium, in partnership with the Malawi MoE, conducted a baseline situation analysis (BSA) of the two-year Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) certificate program. The STEP BSA collected data on TTC management and funding, the methods and types of instruction at TTCs, TTC tutor and student knowledge, skills, and abilities, and observed and identified the context of pre-service teacher education.

This presentation will discuss the results of the TTC component of the BSA and provide an analysis of the data reflecting on policy and practice. The presentation will also discuss how the data was used to inform recommendations and identify interventions to improve teacher education and practice at TTCs
