Adapting/Developing social-emotional tools in Tajikistan

Tue, February 21, 6:30 to 8:00pm EST (6:30 to 8:00pm EST), Grand Hyatt Washington, Floor: Declaration Level (1B), Banneker

Proposal

This first paper will expose the process of adapting the ISELA tool developed by Save the Children in the Tajikistan context. To ensure validity of the SEL measure, the tool needed to go through an adaptation process that included translation of the original tools into local languages, Tajik and Russian in this case, but also to culturally adapt the content of the tool. This translation and adaption process will first be presented and main differences between the original tools and the adapted tools will be highlighted. Results from the pilot study have also been used in the process of the adaptation of this tool.

It could be interesting to compare results from Tajikistan to other countries; these international comparisons could be helpful to have a better understanding of the results with different participants of various studies using ISELA-type tools and with the ability to link different contexts with the development of social-emotional learning. To be able to do so, we need to have comparable tools, which could be a challenge when adapting ISELA to different countries. This presentation will also put the focus on where it could be possible to run international comparisons and where those could be difficult to do.
