Publications on mesmerism between 1780 and 1870: a bibliographical analysis of a contested medical science

In this paper, we will analyse the production of works on mesmerism between 1780 and 1870, drawing on a database compiled from a bibliography produced by Adam Crabtree. Beyond the pace of publications on a subject that has been both contested and adulated, this will be an opportunity to assess the geographical spread of mesmerism during this period, the diversity of authors interested in it, and the dynamics of the controversies that accompanied its dissemination.
