The majority of Indigenous scientific systems were developed over many thousands of years to ensure the sustainability of life forms within their respective territories. Bringing this knowledge and scientific understanding forward in a meaningful and respectful way has historically been virtually impossible within the current Western scientific framework. As a result, Lakota science, protocols to access the same, and Indigenous sciences in general, are not a part of the history of science, other than being mislabeled as “anthropology” or “myth.”
At the request and under the direction of her Elder Lakota knowledge keepers, Running Horse Collin’s work focuses on establishing new protocols for cross-cultural and cross-scientific collaborations involving Indigenous Peoples and their respective scientific systems, the life forms they protect, and Western science. In this panel, Running Horse Collin will draw from her experience creating a path for Indigenous scientific knowledge and systems to be brought forward in a manner aligned with protocol, allowing for groundbreaking, collaborative scientific research to be conducted and published. Additionally, she will discuss the process of creating and aligning research within community constructs and Indigenous scientific protocols. Running Horse Collin will share a newly developed and successfully applied model that allows for authentic cross-cultural and cross-scientific system collaboration between Indigenous and Western science for the purpose of sustaining all life. Her team’s award-winning, collaborative research regarding the horse will serve as a case study. Join us as we follow our Horse Nation relatives on this new path toward our shared, sustainable future.
