This study examines the implicit and explicit values that have guided rhetorical, critical and empirical research over the decades from 1951 to 2013. Based on an archive of 9,427 journal articles from the leading association-based journals in communication, the study used qualitative data techniques to extract value statements based on 22 value terms. Central and peripheral values were identified and their trajectories and changes over nine, seven-year time periods were analyzed.
