Mark Yourself as Safe? Exploring the Utility of Facebook’s Safety Check Feature

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to assess the perceived quality, awareness, trust, usefulness, and perceived ease of use of the Facebook safety check technology. By cross-analyzing the use of Facebook safety check during three different emergency scenarios, this study identifies common factors that can be used to make a holistic assessment regarding the utility of the technology, which in turn demonstrates whether other social media platforms should follow Facebook’s initiative.
