Session Submission Type: Panel
Date: Thursday, May 25, 2017 (8:30 am – 5:00 pm)
Rationale:
Every two years the division has sponsored its doctoral consortium to help socialize students as they move toward finishing their degrees. This full-day workshop brings together doctoral students and faculty to examine contemporary issues related to the development of our next generation of scholars.
This preconference will include a diverse set of faculty mentors from around the world to help advanced doctoral students think through how to develop their professional identities locally (at their home institutions and in their local communities) and globally (through publications, collaborations, professional associations such as ICA etc.). We will address topics such as:
• the transition from graduate school to becoming a professional colleague with a new identity
• opportunities to cultivate one’s professional identity with new approaches/methods and novel research domains/sites
• publishing one’s work – local and global considerations
• cultivating collaborations with new colleagues and new disciplines, locally and globally, to address scholarly and social problems
• new demands and opportunities related to teaching and engagement in our communities
• how to find your “niche” while at the same time keeping a broad perspective on the field
• how to keep abreast of things – as the field develop so does one’s professional identity.
