Digitalization has increased the importance of algorithms in society, and in the production and consumption of news. In this context, a four-year acquired research project develops an algorithm that brings personalization and privacy in balance with each other, promoting news diversity. In this extended abstract we will briefly introduce this project at large. Moreover, we will discuss the challenging nature of translating notions of news diversity into a language that is understood by algorithms.
