This presentation explores the role of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) in promoting healing, reconciliation, and accountability in South Africa and Canada. TRCs remain beneficial for creating inclusive, empathetic, thriving communities and organizations (Sarkin, 2019). A literature review identifies three critical lessons for current leadership committed to social change: promoting reconciliation, addressing past hurts, and taking a holistic approach to problem-solving (Barnard-Naudé, 2009; Chapman & van der Merwe, 2008; Chrisjohn & Wasacase, 2009).
Key Takeaway 1: Firstly, promoting reconciliation requires creating safe spaces for people to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives (Nagy, 2002).
Key Takeaway 2: Secondly, addressing past hurts necessitates acknowledging past wrongs and providing reparations where possible (Denis & Bailey, 2016).
Key Takeaway 3: Thirdly, a holistic approach to problem-solving involves recognizing the interdependence of different aspects of people's lives and experiences and promoting empathy, inclusion, and diversity in all spheres (Alfred, 2005).
