Leading for Cultivating and Dwelling in Peace for a Thriving Future

Fri, October 13, 16:30 to 17:45 PDT (16:30 to 17:45 PDT), Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Floor: North Tower, Grand Ballroom Floor, Grand Ballroom

Short Description

The questions and problems that we raise and address in this interactive workshop are: In our world of turmoil, unrest, indiscriminate use of our natural resources, and killing of persons as if they do not matter, how do we dwell with each other in ways that protect, safeguard, and spare each other from harm for the sake of peace? How, in other words, can we cultivate positive peace for a thriving future while in the middle of negative peace? How do individuals or groups share their stories to transform minds and hearts?

This interactive workshop, rooted in audience participation and active learning, is aimed at peace leadership scholars, researchers, facilitators, and practitioners. Conceptually, Burns’ (1978) formulation of the “essence” and “fundamental act” of leadership, and in our view, transforming leadership, forms a partial framework of our approach. Partial, in that Burns’ understanding of leadership, is further complemented by Heidegger’s formulation of how we need to dwell with each other for the sake of peace.

Key Takeaway 1: Understanding the differences between peace building and peace dwelling.

Key Takeaway 2: Understanding the power of stories and storytelling to induce others to feel the need to meaningfully define their values for the sake of peace.

Key Takeaway 3: Understanding the power of listening, including the skill of remaining silent, for the sake of peace-dwelling. And, building a network to support each other in efforts towards peace dwelling.
