Streams and Specialties: Leadership for Peace - Other Aspects of Leadership for Peace
The theme of the global conference is 'cultivating leadership for a thriving future'. The path to a thriving future will be paved with setbacks; already many people are starting from points of defeat and desolation. This panel convenes people with varied experiences and research-based insights of leadership in contexts of setbacks, wrong turns, failures and defeats - what can and should leaders do in these circumstances; and how does defeat affect attitudes to leaders, leadership and notions of a thriving future? Examples include prospects in Ukraine and Russia, the US (and allies) 2022 retreat from Afghanistan, and policies of ‘managed retreat’ that will be necessary in many cities and regions in the face of climate change, from Fiji to Florida and beyond. There are many possible approaches to this topic, and on this panel we focus on organizational, political, policy, and societal phenomena related to leadership. There are also profound implications for the personal aspects of leading, following and coaching which we hope to discuss at a later date.
Key Takeaway 1: A tentative model to guide people taking up leadership in the midst of, or after defeat of various kinds.
Key Takeaway 2: Appreciation of how leaders and leadership are perceived after defeat, and the implications for restoration and recovery.
Key Takeaway 3: Recommendations for the wider fields of leadership studies, post-conflict recovery, politics and international relations. Especially for the potential contributions that ILA might make.
