Translation and Dissent

Fri, May 29, 2:00 to 3:45pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Panel

Abstract

This session explores ways in which translation may create, suppress or re-channel dissent in contemporary poetry. Examples involve Latin American poets such as Morejón, Pizarnik, and Escobar. We will consider how, for the creative writer, translation can serve as a method of defamiliarization to facilitate new approaches in a writer’s original language. How can translators envision their work as a process that resists dominant patterns in target languages and putatively stable registers of expression? The subject of dissent arises not only within poems but in contextual frameworks the translator must address. Issues of race, resistance, and abjection present special challenges.
