Cuba’s Evolving International Economic Relations

Sat, May 30, 10:00 to 11:45am, TBA

Abstract

This presentation will present an overview and analysis of Cuba’s evolving international economic relations, the time frame being 2000-present (i.e., the late Fidel and subsequent Raúl periods). Descriptive data will be presented on the evolving patterns associated with such variables as: regional trade diversification (exports and imports), primary trading partners, primary export products (goods and services), foreign investment (FDI—foreign direct investment), and foreign credits/debt. Then, consistent with the overall theme of the panel, the major initiatives in these areas will be analyzed with an emphasis on the main challenges confronting contemporary Cuban foreign policy as it seeks to navigate the complex world of international economic relations in an era of increasing globalization.
