Post-neoliberal Governance in Argentina: New ‘Dependency’ with a ’Progressive’ face

Thu, May 28, 12:00 to 1:45pm, TBA

Abstract

This paper examines the extent that the macroeconomic governance in post-default Argentina represents a break with the socio-economic governance dominant during the neo-liberal period. Its argues that even if we can find significant ruptures with the socio-economic governance dominant before the default, as well we can find an important degree of continuation. Using the soy complex as a case study, the paper shows how even if the current governance can be regarded as ‘progressive’, the growing influence the main TNCs within the soy complex are having for the sustainability of the current project reflects an important degree of continuation with the international traits of neoliberalism. This illustrate a new form of ‘external restriction’ under a post-neoliberal governance and how agri-business had replaced the IMF as an external stakeholder with the power to shaped policy making in Argentina.
