Session Submission Type: Meeting

Abstract

This multivocational panel considers the location of neighborhoods between Queens and Latin America, metropolitan New York, and the world as well as between art and scholarship, activism and public humanities, and present and past as explored by Between Neighborhoods, Seth Fein's audiovisual installation that will be exhibited in the CUNY Graduate Center and in Queens College's Art Center Gallery beginning in mid-May. This multimedia work travels transhistorically between Queens today and the last New York World's Fair there a half century ago, which monumentally staged the interborough and interamerican imperial ideologies that generated the Cold War cognates –– outerborough and Third World. As LASA celebrates its semicentennial in Manhattan, Between Neighborhoods demonstrates that the organization's origins occupy the same historical neighborhood in which rose the World Fair still-standing colossal rendering of the world –– Unisphere –– in Queens, where innerborough society remaps the neighborhoods of Latin America and Latin American Studies, modernization and globalization, as they have developed between the end and the start of the US-Cuban Cold War. http://www.centerforthehumanities.org/programming/between-neighborhoods
