Cyber-cities and Digital Humanities in Latin America

Sun, May 29, 9:45 to 11:15am, TBA

Abstract

In this presentation, I evoke Stephen Graham's notion of Cyber-cities to explore the roles Digital Humanities can play in research focusing on how Latin American cities are transformed by digital media and new technologies. For Graham, Cyber-cities are not only confined to our immaterial image of the cyber-space, but instead evoke the connections and disconnection among urban physical environments, technological infrastructures, socio-economic phenomena, uses of digital media among city dwellers and representations of cities in cyberspace. I argue that research on cyber-cities can benefit from a perspective that considers that the city can be studied both as a problem within Digital Humanities and also as an institutional and infrastructural platform for the promotion of Digital Humanities.
