Abstract

ENGLISH: There are controversial theories on environmental-induced migration, and environmental and climate induced migration is a complex phenomenon. The presentation analyses empirically environmental migration in Mexico with some global and with some empirical data from the central part of Mexico. We used quantitative and qualitative methods and the reasons for migration were droughts and floods. We also found a gender-bias in environmental migration, where women, head of household were left behind and were confronted with dual vulnerability (environmental and social one). The lack of governmental support reduced their coping strategies and obliged members of the family to migrate inside Mexico or abroad to the US, where organized crime is increasing risks and threat for crossing the border.

ESPAÑOL: Existe controversia en las teorías de migración inducida ambientalmente (MIA); la migración inducida por factores ambientales y climáticos es un fenómeno complejo. Este trabajo analiza empíricamente la migración ambiental en México con datos empíricos, especialmente de la zona del centro de México, cotejados con datos internacionales. A partir de un análisis triangulado cualitativo y cuantitativo se establece que las principales causas ambientales de la migración son la sequía y las inundaciones. Además, hay un sesgo de género en la migración ambiental, donde las mujeres cabeza de hogar, se quedan atrás y deben enfrentar una doble vulnerabilidad: ambiental y social. La falta de apoyo del gobierno redujo sus estrategias de adaptación y obligaron a los miembros de las familiar a emigrar al interior de México o al extranjero, especialmente a EUA, donde el crimen organizado está exacerbando los riesgos y amenazas para cruzar la frontera.
