Peru faces a rising number of protests against mining projects. One recent example includes the expansion of Southern Peru Copper Corporation near the agricultural area of Tambo Valley in the region of Arequipa, Peru. A recent public opinion survey (May 2015) reveals opposition (43%) and support (46%) for the mining project – Tía María. Using the results from a new public opinion survey in Arequipa, I examine the environmental, economic, political and sociological attitudes of those who support and oppose Tía María.
