This presentation explores the genealogies and trajectories of the tradition of El baile de moros y cristianos in Honduras. I discuss why numerous populations –Spanish creoles, indigenous groups and the Black Garifuna— appropriated this dance since the Colonial Period and explain how it has become one of the most important cultural, religious and identitary practices for Hondurans. As part of this discussion, I will also provide an analysis of the modifications it has undergone, including its multi-language dialogue, use of Caribbean or indigenous instrumentation and rhythms, and its adoption as a central component of patron saint commemorations and popular community theatric performances. Overall, this paper attests to the longevity of the tradition of Moors and Christians and how this one cultural practice and symbol has taken different meanings and paths in Honduras.
