On January 27, 2014 the International Court of Justice put an end to the Chilean and Peruvian maritime disputes by a sentence that favored Peru, leaving Chile without control over part of its formerly claimed maritime territory. This verdict was part of a long tradition of pacific solution of controversies in the form of international court decisions, arbitrations, and treaties.Using a survey experiment from the poll “The Americas and The World”, this paper sustains that elite’s perception of conflict arbitration and respect to the international laws has spread from the elites to the general public.
