How Juan Flores Taught me to Theorize Black in English, Latina/o Race, and National Beloning in Italy Belonging

Abstract

Juan Flores served as mentor to multiple generations of Latina/o Studies scholars, both directly and indirectly. His theories have been instrumental to numerous scholars of Blackness in diaspora. This paper tracks the far-reaching implications of his life's work on diaspora, empire, Afrolatinidad and the mentoring of students and faculty as I reflect on my own research on Afro Latinas/os in Italy.
