Session Submission Type: Panel
Despite the highly politicized nature of the state in the region, there is still little comparative research about the politics of patronage appointments, its scope, and varieties. The panel aims to fill in this gap by studying the dynamics of patronage appointments in various countries in Latin America. In particular, participants are encouraged to answer the following questions: Who has the power of making political appointment in the state, and what are the motives behind these appointments? And, what explains differences in patronage practices across or within countries?
