Session Submission Type: Panel
Sustaining the modern nation requires more effort than control, as national order arises from the performance of unforced routines (Benedict Anderson). Its identity is largely habitual; its production, mostly a reproduction. It can be argued that it is by definition dependent on the operations of mass media, and that seriality guarantees their survival. From a culture industry approach -mass media create ideology by a time-regime predicated on quotidian reinforcement-, to examining the coincidence between the liberal nation with the seriality of the economic system of capitalism, this panel discusses the nature of seriality in Latin American literature, television and comics.
