This paper focuses on present and future prospects of community and K-12 outreach strategies pursued by the National Resource Centers (NRCs) funded by the U.S. Department of Education through Title VI. Particular emphasis is placed on institutions working to serve underrepresented communities away from metropolitan areas and in contexts that do not necessarily feature a significant Latin American migrant community presence. What are the particular challenges faced by these institutions vis-a-vis the implicit and explicit mandate outlined by Title VI guidelines? What strategies can be deployed to sustain a successful outreach scheme in such settings? What particular lessons can be gleaned from the historical development of centers for Latin American Studies that might be applicable and relevant to other area studies contexts?
