Race & Space: Identities Across a Critical Race Spectrum

Mon, May 1, 6:00 to 7:45pm, TBA

Abstract

How do U.S. students of color with limited exposure social justice issues in Latin America conceptualize these issues? The paper uses social constructivist analysis to assess the experiences of undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups (African-American, African immigrant, bi-racial, and LGBT) in a 2016 two-week social justice learning experience in Peru (Krippendorf, 2004). Discussions of race and colorism in Peru were the common denominator, as well as intersectionality of race with class, language, and patriarchy. The paper further identifies the key socio-cultural challenges and advances experienced by this group of students of color, and how the salience of their lived experiences of racial identity influence this dominant gaze on social justice issues in Peru.
