The current crisis of Mercosur, the stagnation of UNASUR, and the lack of leadership in both organizations can be seen as indicators of crisis within Latin American regionalism. Other regional organizations such as the Andean Community and ALBA are also in bad shape. Moreover, the democracy clauses of Latin American regional organizations do not really cope with the current challenges to democracy in Latin America. While political cooperation between Latin American governments is showing signs of strain, there is a new impetus for economic and trade based cooperation, best symbolized by the successful promotion of the Pacific Alliance. Last not least with its new secretary general the OAS has become active in regard to democracy promotion contesting UNASUR’s predominance in South American affairs. Is the period of post-hegemonic regionalism over, and what is future of Latin American regionalism?
