Session Submission Type: Roundtable
In this workshop, scholars based in the U.S. and England will explore Peru’s political and economic trajectories since the 1970s. We assume that a considerable number of Peruvian scholars will be participating in this Congress and we will offer the perspectives of scholars from the North who have studied Peru for decades—perspectives that tend to be more positive about Peru’s direction. Participants will respond to these questions: Since 2000 and the flight of Alberto Fujimori, has Peru’s political rollercoaster—the fluctuation between authoritarian and democratic governments—come to a stop? Is the quality of its democracy improving? And, has Peru’s economic rollercoaster—the fluctuation between growth and recession—come to a stop? Is the economy diversifying and becoming independent of external demand for commodities with volatile prices? And, ultimately, is the long-standing economic, social, and political breach between Peru’s hinterlands and its capital finally closing?
