Women and the Olympics: Representation of Women Athletes and Activists during the XIX Olympiad

Mon, May 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, TBA

Abstract

The XIX Olympiad took place in Mexico from October 1963 to October 1968. The government saw it as an important nation building project that would help Mexico be incorporated into the selected group of developed countries. There is a growing body of literature that has looked at how the Government and the IOC tried to benefit, but little attention has been placed on the perceptions of the Olympic Games. The citizenry has been overlooked, and most importantly the role of women. This paper will use documents from the IOC and government, the press and semi structured interviews to athletes and activists.
