'Everybody talking at once': Dominican Politics, Racial Formations and Feminism in the Pan-Antillian, Pan-American and Transatlantic Context, 1844 to 1901

Abstract

This paper considers how and why feminism in the Dominican Republic emerges in conversation with domestic and Pan-American liberal nationalism, pro-Black liberation pan-Antillianism, and critical trans-Atlantic networks. Feminists in the DR integrated these often contradictory broader political agendas to varying degrees as they articulated domestic agendas they hoped would foster well-being (bienestar) and self-determination for the country as a whole, and with a recognized central role for women as co-creators of the body politic.
