To be poor, Latinx, and queer in 1970's America was to be part of a shunned community. Sylvia Rivera was a vanguard of the Gay Liberation Movement, yet her story has been omitted from historical accounts for decades.
Through the re-examination of Latin, LGBTQ+ American culture, this paper explores the importance of Rivera’s struggles and accomplishments. Her work on the frontlines was crucial in paving the way for a Gay Liberation Movement, promoting equality for all regardless of class, race, sex, or religion.
