Mexico's Future under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador: a Speculative Discussion

Abstract

Participants in this round table will cover a wide range of issues that will be facing the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the point when he will be six months into his sexenio. We will address public policy and political process questions of all kinds. These will include: human rights, security, and the press, the border and immigration (including reintegration of Mexicans deported from the United States as well as the movement of Central Americans through Mexico); U.S.-Mexican relations, including the “war on drugs,” the flow of U.S.-made arms into Mexico and, above all, the capacity of the new regime to face down Trump; agriculture and rural development (including food policy, land tenure, climate change, peasant organizations and social policies directed at rural communities); social policy in urban settings, the new regime’s relationship with organized labor, and the reconfiguration of political parties and social movements in this new conjuncture.
