Session Submission Summary

Creativity in the margins: displacements, the body and images of power (part 2: migration and its expressions)

Fri, May 24, 10:45am to 12:15pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Panel

Abstract

In this panel we propose to discuss the notions of margin in order to stress its creative potential. By this proposal we also problematize the notion of periphery, traditionally and simplistically associated to precariousness or defined in opposition to center or to hegemonic values. Thus, we dwell on the margins by following different displacements – of materialities, visualities, sounds, bodies, people, things, aesthetics – as also through subjectivation processes. By means of a discussion focused on the margins we propose to address matters of perspectives rather than the problem of territory or territoriality.

The panel brings together investigations conducted in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and United States. Our main aim is to discuss the creative assessments that living in the margins can afford to the subjects, a proposal we carry on by investigating themes organized in three different axes: the body and creative subjects (part 1); migration and its expressions (part 2); city and its images of power (part 3). We gather works resulting from an anthropological perspective as from art history, literary studies and geography. We expect the discussion to shed to light on the complexities of the notion of margins from an anthropological perspective in dialogue with other disciplines.
