What explains the dissimilar record on minority rights achievements in Latin America? While most Latin American countries had adopted measures such as affirmative action to enhance women’s political representation, the region also exhibits high levels of gender violence and gender inequality. Similarly, governments in Latin America recognize same sex marriage; however societies still display high levels of homophobia. This panel explores the struggles, obstacles and opportunities faced by specific groups in trying to achieve higher levels of equality and inclusion in the region. The panel includes three papers related to LGTB rights, women’s reproductive rights, and women’s access to sexual education.
