Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Abstract

Teaching Latino studies today: A roundtable with editors and advisory board members of the journal, Latino Studies

The current political climate has motivated many professors to rethink our pedagogical practices. This roundtable discussion with Latino Studies journal editors and advisory board members from different regions of the US seeks to generate a discussion on pedagogical challenges and opportunities when teaching Latino studies courses today.

We will consider the following questions:

How can we help students think critically about Latino studies in the context of the heightened scapegoating and demonization of immigrants and Latinos in the US?

In this era of intense political polarization, how do we manage diversity of perspectives in the classroom? How should we address tensions in the classroom?

Are there particular situations or conflicts that have arisen on your campus or in your geographical region that have forced you to grapple with or rethink how you approach your pedagogical mission?
