Abstract

Director: Ana Isabel Bustamente

Ana sometimes is short of breath, her mother thinks it’s because during her pregnancy, for a moment she stopped breathing. It was the afternoon of February 13 1982, the day her father, Emil, just like another 45,000 civilians was detained and disappeared by the Guatemalan army during armed conflict.
Now, amidst the silence and fear that reign in a post war society, Ana submerges herself in the memory of those who knew her father, in the memories that have not been spoken or have been hidden. She will enter the bureaucratic labyrinth that contains the only remote possibility of finding his remains and attaining some sort of justice. Asphyxia is a journey into the uncharted waters of memory, in which Ana sails, conscience of how memories can reinvent themselves and forget details. What she searches in this sea is to create images of a father she never knew.
