Fri, May 24, 4:00 to 5:30pm, TBA

Abstract

It research shows a case of mining resistance in the context of a boom in extractivism in the región. The decision of inhabitants of Tambo´s valley to avoid the entrance of Tia Maria mining Project represents an emblematic case of mining resistance in Peru. In that sense, the main question is focus on which the resistance is based. The hypothesis is the resistance is based on embeddedness of economic. It means a social control over the economy, especially in fictitious commodities: land and labor, both mains resources for agriculture. Due to this fact, attempts to uproot economy encounter resistance. Thus, Karl Polanyi´s approach to the social dimensión of economy is taken up again. As a conclusión, it is not the rejection of the market economy that allows resistance to extrativism, but the integration into the agricultural market of an economy rooted into the sustainability of resources through strong agricultural ties.
