The interpretation of waste picking by the pickers: a biographical study

Mon, May 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, TBA

Abstract

Brazil registered more than 400.000 waste pickers in 2010. They obtained their income collecting and selling recyclable materials. Despite the social and environmental benefits of their activity, which consists of collecting, separating, and selling waste, this work has low legitimacy and is often at risk of being prohibited by the Brazilian legislation. Given this scenario, this biographical research investigated how waste pickers interpret their work. Thus, it was possible to understand and explain the process of emergence and development of their interpretation of the activity of picking the waste. The results show that, on one hand, waste picking represents a means for consumption while it constitutes, on the other hand, an important source of social recognition for those who practice it. Regarding the elaboration of public policies of education, work, and income for these workers, the results point out to the importance of implementing inclusive social policies that at the same time guarantee social justice.
