This presentation critically engages the concept of “Multidimensional Security” formalized by OAS member states’ Declaration on Security in the Americas just over 15 years ago. From a hemispheric/inter-American orientation, I suggest utility of a few broad analytic categories to frame common threats and vulnerabilities. I discuss challenges of balancing national vs. human security priorities and then assess political and practical barriers that states face in operationalizing collective action and more effective security coordination. Concluding reflections explore whether the OAS “multidimensional” concept ultimately adds value to regional security discourse and how it may offer insights for future policy initiatives… with impacts for justice and inclusion.
