Racism and anti-racism in Latin America: comparative perspectives, Part 1

Fri, May 24, 9:00 to 10:30am, TBA

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Abstract

Racism is a term and a concept that is increasingly common in public debates and domains in Latin America. This panel seeks to explore this conjuncture - which could be seen as an achievement in terms of anti-racist struggle - by asking several related questions. What do different people refer to when using the concept? What is implied by using this concept rather than some other - such as ethnic or even racial discrimination? Does the concept have different meanings in different countries or in different contexts - for example, anti-indigenous versus anti-black racism? Is there something particular about the use of the term in Latin American contexts characterized by pervasive ideas of mestizaje as a key feature of the nation? Is there something particular about the way anti-racist struggles are conceived and put into practice in these contexts, or is Latin American anti-racism the same as anti-racism elsewhere in the world? What happens to notions of racism and anti-racism when thought through the notion of intersectionality in a mestizo context?
