In this panel, we examine recent research directed at understanding how political regimes develop within countries. It is becoming increasingly apparent that subnational authoritarian regimes prevail alongside democratic national governments in many Latin America democracies. This panel investigates the dynamics surrounding subnational authoritarian enclaves in nationally democratic Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.
