The Language Ideologies of New Post-Secondary Writing Center Tutors: Beliefs and Practices

Fri, December 5, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Santa Monica 4

Abstract

Writing centers serve as sites of writing instruction on college campuses, and tutors often encounter students who may write in nonstandardized ways. I explored the language ideologies of writing center tutors and how ideologies manifest in their tutoring. From an embedded case study, emergent findings indicate tutors value voice in writing, but limit this definition to stylistic choices. Further, there is tension between this value and their goal of setting students up for academic success.
