Bridging the Secondary ELA training and licensure divide: The case of successful ELA teachers in rural schools assigned out of field (OOF)

Thu, December 4, 8:30 to 10:00am, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Sunset 4

Abstract

When teachers teach classes for which they are not licensed, they are teaching out of field (OOF). Teaching OOF is a misalignment between a teacher’s qualifications and the subject they teach. In this study we seek to understand the divide between teachers who are teaching in their certification and those who are not to answer the question, “What factors contribute to secondary ELA teachers’ success when assigned to teach at least one course OOF?”
