Hearing the whole story: Examining preservice teacher agency in an empathy conversation

Abstract

This study examines an empathy conversation between a field supervisor and a preservice teacher. Empathy conversations are a coaching tool aimed at disrupting hierarchies in coaching relationships. Reconstructive discourse analysis is used to analyze the empathy conversation. Findings point to agentive moves the PST makes in the empathy conversation, as well as considerations for disrupting traditional coaching norms.
