Session Submission Type: Symposium
Writing and drawing are important entries to literacy for young children. This symposium explores how these processes reveal children’s complex thinking and meaning-making. The first paper examines shifts in children’s intentions while writing, making important connections to self-regulation. The second paper focuses on illustrations and emphasizes how children demonstrate knowledge through drawings. The third paper evaluates an intervention enhancing narrative development using picturebook illustrations. Our discussant will address considerations for literacy assessment and language development.
