Session Submission Type: Alternative Format Session
The Science of Reading (SOR) has ignited debates and legislative action, often framed as a literacy solution. However, implementation challenges arise in diverse settings influenced by sociocultural factors. This panel of seven Kansas literacy experts from seven different institutions examines the state’s SOR legislation, how they grappled with co-designing IDA-aligned coursework, creating a common assessment, and proposing required Centers for Reading Excellence while addressing broader political forces: advocating for equitable, context-sensitive approaches beyond prescriptive solutions.
