The Sciences of Reading
Peter P. Afflerbach, University of Maryland
Science should inform our understanding of reading development, reading achievement, and effective instruction. The much-discussed science of reading reflects a heritage of information processing and cognition: strategies, skills, and knowledge. In this presentation, I suggest that the sciences of reading offer a more comprehensive base from which to propose and test theory, conduct research, and implement instruction.
Dr. Afflerbach’s presentation will be followed by Reading Hall of Fame members hosting round table discussions on the Sciences of Reading and other current literacy topics. All LRA members and conference attendees wishing to converse with these RHF members on this variety of topics are welcome.
