This theoretical paper supports literacy researchers, teacher-educators, and classroom teachers seeking to enhance their teaching using digital, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based maps. Drawing upon critical, theoretical frameworks including geospatial literacies (Soja, 2009), imagination (Benjamin, 2024), and speculative civics (Mirra & Garcia, 2023), we share how theory informed pedagogical approaches centered on mapping. We trace assignments and activities that enhanced student learning for transnational immigrant youth enrolled in an A.P. Human Geography class.
